Yam Juice Dyeing: The degummed silk yarn or fabric is soaked in the juice of Dioscorea cirrhosa, a characteristic plant in Guangdong. This plant juice contains tannins and other components. The silk absorbs the components in the yam juice through soaking, laying the foundation for the subsequent color change. Mud Coating: After dyeing with yam juice, the fabric is evenly covered with mud from the rivers and ponds in the Pearl River Delta region. This kind of mud is rich in iron and other minerals. The iron in the mud reacts with the tannins in the yam juice on the fabric, resulting in a color change. Usually, after this process, one side of the fabric turns black and the other side shows a copper color. Drying and Rinsing: The mud-coated fabric is first dried in the shade to allow the chemical reaction between the mud and the yam juice to proceed sufficiently. Then it is rinsed with clean water to wash away the mud on the surface. After rinsing, it is dried again, and this time it is usually dried in the sun or in a well-ventilated place. The entire drying and rinsing process may be repeated many times. Finishing: After drying and rinsing, the fabric may undergo processes such as ironing and shaping to make its surface smoother and more even, and to give it a better texture and appearance.
